Travel Plans for the CPA Exam Book a Hotel Room Now! (SmartPros) You study hard for the CPA exam so you're well-prepared, but don't forget the logistics of your travel plans, including your hotel reservations. [Editor's Note: this article is in reference to the old paper-based exam, not the computer-based exam that is now in use.] CPA exam candidates who live more than one hour away from the testing site should plan to stay in a hotel close to the actual site. Beginning with the May 2000 CPA exam, candidates who arrive late for the exam may not be allowed to sit. Some states require an interview with an exam proctor before the candidate can enter the testing room. Don’t risk missing the opportunity to sit for the exam. Reserve a hotel room for each night before the exam section(s) you must sit for. For example, if you are sitting for the entire exam, reserve a room for both Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Book early. If you are unsure as to which testing site your will be assigned to, book rooms at both locations. Simply cancel the extra booking when you find out your testing location. Don’t decide on a hotel simply for price. Think about the service you will need. Having the ability to walk to the exam site gives candidates more comfort than worrying about fighting rush-hour traffic in a strange city. Ask about late check-out. The accounting and reporting exam ends at noon on Thursday. If you are close to the testing site, you might consider checking out at noon. Ask about an express check-out option so you won’t have to waste valuable time standing in line. Find out about baggage storage. Usually hotels will store your bags for free. Don’t leave the hotel details to the last minute. Plan ahead and make your arrangements several months before the actual exam date. |
