Famed Tenor Pavarotti Settles Tax Case to Tune of $12 Million

ROME, July 28, 2000 (SmartPros) After a four-year legal battle, famed opera star Luciano Pavarotti has reportedly agreed to pay $12 million to the Italian Treasury to settle charges against him of tax evasion.

Tax officials alleged that the Italian singer ducked his tax bill by claiming the tax haven of Monte Carlo, rather than Italy, where he keeps two homes, as his official residence, wire service reports said.

An appeals court ruled last year that Pavarotti spends most of his time in Italy and therefore must pay Italian taxes, the Associated Press reported.

Pavarotti denied any wrongdoing. "I want at last to have myself free of a big, big strain," he said, according to AP.
