IRS Publication 78 Available Over the Internet

June 9, 1997 (SmartPros) CPAs and accounting professionals are trusted to be good tax advisors, providing shortcuts to their clients whenever possible. Dispensing useful advice not only saves time and money; it puts the professional in a solid position to further develop client loyalty and business. Here is a tip to give clients who go that extra mile to provide as many details on their returns (annual or quarterly) prior to seeing their CPA: Taxpayers no longer must call the IRS to check the tax-exempt status of their favorite charity.

Anyone with Internet access can confirm that their charitable contributions qualify for a deduction on their tax returns by accessing the names of nearly 500,000 tax-exempt organizations.

The IRS' Publication 78 is a cumulative list of organizations in which donations qualify as charitable contributions. The entire contents of this publication is now listed on the IRS' Web site, www.irs.ustreas.gov.

The listing is accessible through the "Tax Information For You" section of the page. From there, simply click on the option entitled, "Exempt Organization Search." The user-friendly format is searchable by name (or portions of a name), organization, city and/or state.

The listing is updated each quarter with the names of newly exempted organizations.
