Opportunities in Education

Teaching offers the opportunity to work with future accounting and business professionals. Employment opportunities exist at over 2,000 academic programs in the US and fall into three categories: 1) universities and colleges, including research universities, comprehensive universities, and small colleges; 2) community and technical colleges; and 3) high schools.

Generally, the larger the school, the narrower the teaching and research focus for faculty members. Faculties at large universities tend to specialize in one particular field and are considered experts in their chosen concentration. For someone who enjoys variety, smaller universities and colleges, community colleges, and high schools may be preferable because the faculties are required to teach other subjects as well. In a small university setting, faculties normally teach accounting in addition to other business courses. For high school teachers, the options are even broader and may venture beyond business subjects.

A teacher must master both written and verbal communication skills. A desire to continually learn and be a good student is necessary to stay on the cutting edge of the changing world. You should enjoy being around people, and have patience enough to explain things more than once. Teaching is a multi-dimensional profession including writing, reading, researching, and communicating. And teachers need to interact with industry professionals to remain current on emerging problems and issues.
