Preparation is critical to building your presentation skills. The better prepared you are, the more confident you will feel. And, the more confident you feel, the better you will be able to convey your message in a relaxed, professional manner. Here are some tips:
- Rehearse. Practice presenting in front of friends or videotape your speech and play it back to see how it can be improved. Be familiar enough with the content so that you don't have to read from your notes. You should be able to refer to an outline of key topics for your discussion.
- Think positively. Anyone can develop excellent speaking skills. While it helps to be outgoing and charismatic, it's not essential. Substance is key.
- Focus on your audience's needs. Think about how you can be of service to your audience, and you will feel less threatened addressing them. They are there because they want to learn something from you. Be sure to anticipate questions they may ask.
- Use supporting materials. In addition to flip charts and handouts, take advantage of the presentation software to create great visuals, including graphics and charts.
After you've given your presentation, ask for feedback from others whose opinion you value. Encourage them to provide constructive criticism and try to learn from their comments. The poise you gain from public speaking can prove valuable in future job interviews.
