Are Informational Interviews Really Valuable?

(SmartPros) Q: Several of my professors have recommended scheduling informational interviews at companies. Are these really valuable if my main goal is to get a job?

A: Scheduling informational interviews is a great way to gain access to knowledgeable accounting and finance managers who can help you in your career. Even if they're not in a position to offer you a specific job, they can provide valuable advice and may also recommend you for future job openings at their firm. Remember, though, that these are not job interviews; your purpose is to obtain information. If you ask about employment openings, the person you're meeting with may be caught off-guard or feel misled.

Evaluate your career objectives and take time to think about the topics you'd like to ask about in your discussions. For example, if you're meeting to gain insight into a particular industry, conduct some initial research by reviewing web sites or relevant news clippings.

During the meeting, you'll be asked to provide more information on your background and goals. Discuss your accomplishments and career objectives with enthusiasm and appropriate amounts of detail. This portion of the meeting may be brief, but be sure to make a positive impression so that the person with whom you meet will be eager to recommend you should he or she hear about a job opening.

Always send a short thank-you note via regular mail, within a day or two of your meeting to express your appreciation for the person's time. Use this opportunity to also mention one or two points from your interview that you considered particularly helpful.

Informational interviews can be an important resource as you begin your career. They are an ideal way to learn more about various corporations, industries and hiring trends. By incorporating these meetings into your job search strategy you will gain a clearer understanding of how you can achieve your professional goals.
