Q&A: Three Simple Steps for Interview Preparation

(SmartPros) Q: I'm graduating in about a month, and I have some interviews lined up. How should I prepare?

A: The interview is a critical part of any job search; therefore, preparation is key. Following are some guidelines:

  • Do your homework by acquiring as much knowledge as you can about the firm or corporation where you'll be interviewing. Information is available through the Internet, the public library, trade publications, your network of professional contacts and the company itself. Learn about the organization's history, its clients and areas of specialization. This information will help you provide answers that specifically address the firm's needs and, in the process, you'll feel more self-assured.

  • Anticipate likely questions. One or more of the following will almost always be asked in an interview: "What can you tell me about yourself?" "Why do you want to work for this company?" "What are your strengths/weaknesses?" You should prepare answers to these questions and rehearse a few times before the meeting. This will ensure your responses are targeted.

  • Be sure to look your best and arrive on time. Professional appearance is important, so remember to dress appropriately. Also, find out exactly where the company is located - you might even drive there once before the meeting to determine travel time.
