Q&A: Network Your Way Into a Company

(SmartPros) Q: What's the best way to approach a company that you would like to work for but hasn't advertised any job openings?

One of the best methods is to network your way into the company. Find someone you know who knows someone else in the firm and can arrange an introduction. This person doesn't necessarily have to be in the department in which you ultimately want to work. What you're looking for is someone who can help you make the right connection to the right person.

Once you have a contact, it's a good idea to start by requesting an informational interview so that you can learn about the company and the industry. An informational interview provides you with the opportunity to present yourself in a professional manner. Hopefully, you'll be the first person to come to mind when a position does become available. Keep in mind that this interview is for fact-finding only. Don't ask for a job.

Another strategy for "getting your foot in-the-door" is to consider working for the company in a different capacity. Consider working in an administrative function for them part-time while you're still in school. Or consider working as a temporary professional. A staffing manager can help you obtain a temporary assignment with your target company and many temporary positions turn into full-time opportunities.
